The Importance of the International Building Code (IBC) in the Design and Construction of Safe Buildings

This course introduces you to the International Building Code® (IBC®), which is a model building code developed by the International Code Council® (ICC®). The IBC® Codes provide minimum safeguards for people with regard to building safety. The focus will be on the importance of the code in regard to fire prevention, means of egress, and structural stability. Discussions will also include additional codes (e.g., International Energy Conservation Code®) that, when referenced by the IBC®, are adopted. This course distills the IBC® down to relevant code sections, chapters, and working examples that illustrate fundamental code concepts.

• Recognize the need for safe building design considerations
• Identify the model codes used in the United States and how to locate them online and within the International Building Code® itself
• Recall the code development process
• Recall the minimum building code requirements and regulations that attempt to address the spread of fire
• Recall some of the code modifications from the most recent version of the International Building Code®
