Our century-old approach to structural fire safety results in buildings with an unknown/variable level of reliability under fire conditions as well as a mis allocation of intellectual/physical resources. Specifically, structural fire safety is contemplated after the structural engineering is complete when they are then blanketed with fireproofing material. However, major recent industry developments are paving the way for the proliferation of reliability-based structural design for fire, which can both enhance/harmonize structural reliability under fire conditions as well as reduce the construction time and carbon footprint of buildings. The envisioned endgame is a gradual transition toward intrinsically safer structures to uncontrolled fire conditions with a level of reliability that is consistent with structural design for hurricanes and earthquakes.
