Public spaces are the heart of civic life. They serve as cultural stages, social equalizers, and essential infrastructure for health, safety, and welfare. Yet, too often, they reflect inequities in access, representation, and safety. This two-hour webinar examines the principles and practices of designing inclusive public spaces—places that are welcoming, safe, and representative of all community members, regardless of age, ability, gender, race, or socioeconomic background.

The session begins by unpacking the concept of the urban commons: shared spaces such as parks, plazas, streets, and waterfronts that define collective urban experience. Participants will explore how inclusive design approaches — ranging from universal design and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to participatory engagement and cultural placemaking — can create environments that promote equity and foster a sense of belonging.
