A survey of ABET accredited institutions showed 70% of the surveyed institutions did not require their students to take an ethics-related course. Yet, we all have heard accounts of companies with some type of unethical dilemma that caused a major disaster. Ask yourself, would you allow your family to fly on an airplane that was designed by an engineer who was known to use cheap, unqualified material only because the company gave him a kickback for using their product. Would your family and you live on the top floor of a 20-story high rise knowing an architect did not test the building for safety because the project was behind schedule and over budget? If you answered no, then this course is for you. In this course you will learn how does one handle conflict of interest that lies in that “gray” area. Answer the question, “Are there cases where we can, and should, act against an important principle to achieve an even-more-important benefit?” Engineers and architects are entrusted by the public to provide professional solutions to complex situations, engineers can face ethical dilemmas in all forms. With this course you will learn how ethics is not something you can turn on and off but must live in your everyday scenarios. We will introduce the family lawyer strategy.
