A magnet is a material that attracts other metals. About 4,000 years ago, it was found that a stone called magnetite attracted pieces of iron. It was later found that a long piece of magnetite would align itself with the north and south poles of the earth. Experimentation showed that one end would always align with the North Pole and the other end with the South Pole.
