In an increasingly interconnected and climate-vulnerable world, planners and built environment professionals must prepare for more than isolated hazards—they must anticipate and respond to compound and cascading risks. These risks occur when multiple hazards (e.g., extreme heat, wildfires, infrastructure failures, and pandemics) occur simultaneously or sequentially, amplifying disruption and undermining recovery efforts.

This two-hour webinar explores how these complex risks unfold and what planners can do to mitigate them. Drawing from real-world disaster events and interdisciplinary case studies, participants will examine the mechanisms through which hazards interact, as well as the systemic vulnerabilities that allow localized disruptions to escalate. The course emphasizes systems thinking, proactive risk assessment, and cross-sector coordination as critical strategies in disaster-resilient planning.
Attendees will leave with actionable frameworks and tools to assess interdependencies, prioritize resilience interventions, and protect communities—especially those most at risk—from future compound and cascading disasters.
