The growth of our cities and towns in the 20th century made our transportation networks and infrastructure to become more and more focused on automobiles. Even though with good intentions, the focus on just the automobile mode created a number of problems, such as traffic congestion, environmental damage, and health concerns. As a countermeasure, on the 21st Century, we have started to retrofit and develop our transportation network to focus on all transportation modes, providing equal access to public right-of-way to pedestrians, cyclists and transit users. As with any transportation facility, complete streets are much more difficult to implement within existing conditions than when building new corridors. Through this course, engineers, planners, architects, contractors and practitioners within the A/E/C industry will learn industry best practices for the development of transportation network and corridor plans which include complete streets and multi-modal accommodations, with the focus of making livable streets by planning for walkability and use of their surrounding communities.
